The Help by Kathryn Stockett ...

The Help

Started 15/11/2011 -  finished 26/11/2011

Really enjoyed this book, written in the language style that the characters spoke which took a little bit of getting use to but really enjoyed it. Will be interested to see the film on day.

Mr Rosenblum Dreams in English

Started 31/10/2011 - 12/11/2011

I enjoyed this book although at a few points I thought it dragged on a little. It centred around the Jewish Mr Rosenblum and his wife after their move to England from Germany and his successes and trials.

It was definitely a similar style to  Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson and  The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Anne Shaffer & Annie Barrows (as was written on the cover of the copy I read).

Lola's Secret by Monica McInerney

Lola's Secret book covers (Australia and Ireland)

Started 4/10/2011 - finished 30/10/2011

I have read most of Monica's books although gave her last one a miss as I'm not into short stories.
This one carries on the characters featured in  "Alphabet Sisters".

I enjoyed it but wouldn't rave about it!

Last Chance Cafe by Liz Byrski ...

Last Chance Cafe cover

This book ... was good, not fantastic. More seniors lit than chick lit, as in the era of the characters featured.

Might look into another book by this author in the future.

The Book Thief ...

Finished this last night ... wow ... I loved it!!

When I started reading I thought "oh this is written in a strange way" but I stuck with it and I loved it!

The book is written basically from the perspective of the grim reaper looking down on the goings on of a girl and her family and friends during the Second World War.

Highly recommend it!

Friends, Lovers and Chocolate ...

Friends, Lovers, Chocolate

Finished this one today by Alexander McCall Smith, the second in the Isabel Dalhousie series.

I'd have to say I enjoyed reading it but not as much as the first one.

It is a fairly easy read but there are bits that can be skimmed over and it didn't really feel like a crime novel as such.

I didn't think the story line was as strong.

It could be read without reading the first one as the scene is set and the relevant info in the first book basically explained.

I think I will try the third novel in the series but not just yet!! There are seven novels in the series.

The Sunday Philosophy Club ...

The Sunday Philosophy Club

I finished reading this book this morning ...I  really enjoyed it!

It is the first Alexander McCall Smith novel I have read and I have already started the next novel in the series, "Friends, Lovers and Chocolate"!!

The story was easy to follow with great details describing situations. I felt the style of writing was very "English", which I enjoyed after reading a few America writers recently. There were some bits of the novel that I did skim over a little bit, details that didn't really relate to the actual story line as such.

The style of crime was "soft" / cosy crime, no gory descriptions and the solving of the crime was unpredictable!

I think I would like to also try some of this author's novels in the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series too.

Devil's Food Cake Murder ...

So my second cosy crime for the month!

I have to say I didn't love this book. It took until chapter 9 for the initial crime to occur which seemed to be rather late in the reading process!!

The book seemed to waffle on a bit, it featured quite a bit of detail about cooking which I don't dislike but I started reading it thinking it would be mainly a crime focused novel!

Most chapters feature a detailed recipe at the end, of a baking item featured in the chapter.

The crime solving again waited until the end but I worked it out sooner, so a little predictable.

I don't think I would read this author again, maybe a bit too cosy crime for me!!

Inspector Singh Investigates: A Deadly Cambodian Crime Spree

So for the first genre of our Cummins Book Lovers Club we have crime.

Not usually being a crime reader I went for more of a cosy crime type of novel ... not really in to all the gore that I imagine most crime books have!

This was my first book, I found it reviewed in the Good Reading magazine.

Really enjoyed it, the main character has featured in three previous novels by this author. He came across as a bit of a bumbling detective at times but the "crime" wasn't solved until the end and had the unpredictability that a crime novel probably needs!!

Might try more from this author if I find one of her novels on line to buy!

Hello ...

Well I'm going to copy Amanda and have a book reading blog!

I'll see how I go with 2 blogs!!
